Highlights of the Collection: A Room at the Museum: The Sanctuary of a Prince
A Parisian Study
This room of the museum presents the woodwork and panelling from an aristocratic mansion of the 17th century, recreating the volumes and appearance of an interior during the Grand Siècle - the period in which art of living inspired by the life of the court led to the division of the spaces in aristocratic mansions into living rooms and reception rooms, chambers and antechambers, galleries and studies.

The study was a private space for the master of the house to work, but also to store his precious objects, books and art.
The richly carved and gilded ceiling crowns the whole room with a large allegorical painting of Nobility borne on a cloud as its centrepiece.
